Find the Right Pet Insurance for Your Dog

•	Always check the genetics of your dog by visiting the Canine Health Foundation website A lot of the genetic issues will not be covered by dogs insurance. You may be able to get around this if you insure before the dog is diagnosed.
•	Buy only what suits your needs and budget. All of the major pet insurance companies allow you to get pet insurance quotes online or over the phone. You can also purchase the dog insurance the same way.
•	Schedule a physical AFTER your dog has insurance. If the vet finds an issue before the dog is insured then the dog insurance will be more expensive or you may not even be able to find coverage. If your vet finds an issue after the dog is insured then it should be covered.

Tips & Warnings
•	Puppies have accidents and get injuries much more than full grown dogs. It is usually prudent to get a higher level of accident coverage when they are still young and then take it down a bit after a year or two.
•	It’s hard to identify a dog’s age but your vet can usually tell you a fairly accurate estimate.
•	Multiple pet discounts are available with most pet insurance companies.
•	Purebred dogs are always more expensive to cover.
•	Old dogs, from 9 to 11 are usually denied coverage from most dog insurance companies.
•	Some plans, but not all, cover spaying and neutering so plan accordingly.

Every dog owner wants a playful, healthy dog to brighten up their lives but health issues and enormous vet bills can definitely put a damper on the relationship with the puppy. I recently just got a new puppy and already the vet bills are piling up. I can’t imagine what it would cost if my new puppy (Molly) got seriously ill and needed an operation or some other treatment.

This is where dogs insurance comes in. Recently I’ve been doing a large amount of research into pet insurance to see what will work for me and Molly. Pet insurance will never cover pre-existing conditions so I made sure my puppy didn’t have any defects before even considering insurance. Most dog insurance companies also have restrictions on certain hereditary issues and dog age too. This will usually only affect purebreds and old dogs though.

I’ve found that Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) has the most appealing policy available. They offer various levels of coverage and to get a good idea of what they offer, it is best to visit their site. The best part about VPI’s coverage for me is that their coverage is worldwide and I travel a lot so this is a definite bonus for me when I’m looking for dogs insurance.

I am also going with VPI’s Careguard Routine Care Coverage because my puppy is going to need all sorts of vaccinations and checkups as she grows older.

Adorable puppy worth insuring

This addition to the basic dogs insurance covers:

Accidents

Lab Tests

Surgeries

Prescriptions

Hospitalization

Vaccinations

Heartworm

Flea Control

Urinalysis

Dental or Spay/Neuter

Hopefully Molly will only need the basic vaccinations but it is always good to be covered for any situation.

The only other company that I came close to considering was Pets Best Insurance which also has the worldwide coverage. Also similar to VPI in the dogs insurance that they offer is they offer many different plans. I finally decided on VPI after reading a lot of online reviews.

Some other dogs insurance company that I looked at were:

24PetWatch Dog Insurance

PurinaCare Dog Insurance

PetPlan Dog Insurance

Embrace Dog Insurance

Trupanion Dog Insurance

PetFirst Dog Insurance

Pet Assure

A lot of the dogs insurance plans for these companies were very similar in both cost and coverage and if the worldwide coverage isn’t necessary, it’s probably easier to find the cheapest pet insurance if you get pet insurance quotes from each dogs insurance company. It will probably take a fair amount of time to go through each dog insurance quote to find the best pet insurance that fits your dog and your budget but it the long run it will be well worth it.
